Frozen Chocolate Fudge Delight
1 pkg of chocolate sandwich cookies or graham crackers
1/2 C unsalted butter, melted
1 qt chocolate ice cream
1 jar hot fudge sauce
1 container whipped topping (such as Cool Whip)
optional toppings: chopped nuts, sprinkles, maraschino cherries
Crush the chocolate sandwich cookies or graham crackers into fine crumbs using a food processor or by placing them in a plastic bag and crushing them with a rolling pin. In a mixing bowl, combine the crushed cookies or graham crackers with the melted butter until well combined. Press the mixture firmly into the bottom of a 9 x 13-inch baking dish to form a crust layer. Place the dish in the freezer for about 15 minutes to set. Remove the chocolate ice cream from the freezer and allow it to soften slightly at room temperature for easier spreading. Spread the softened chocolate ice cream evenly over the crust layer in the baking dish. Warm the jar of hot fudge sauce according to the package instructions, then pour it over the layer of chocolate ice cream, spreading it evenly. Place the baking dish back in the freezer and allow the dessert to freeze for at least one to two hours, or until the fudge layer is firm. Once the dessert is firm, spread the whipped topping over the fudge layer. If desired, sprinkle chopped nuts or sprinkles over the whipped topping layer for added texture and decoration. Return the dessert to the freezer and freeze for an additional two or three hours, or until completely firm. When ready to serve, cut the frozen chocolate fudge delight into squares and garnish each serving with a maraschino cherry if desired.
