Golden Caramel Cake

2 C brown sugar

2 C flour

1/2 C shortening

1/2 tsp salt

2 eggs

1 C sour milk or buttermilk

1 tsp baking soda (dissolve in 1 T boiling water)

 

Mix together first four ingredients until crumbly and reserve 3/4 cup for topping.  Add two eggs, one cup sour milk or buttermilk, and one teaspoon baking soda dissolved in one tablespoon of boiling water.  Mix well. Pour into greased 9 x 13-inch pan, sprinkle with 3/4 cup crumb topping.  Bake in 350 degree oven for 35 minutes.
